Heat shrink tubing is a shrinkable plastic material used to protect and insulate wires and cables. As the tubing is wrapped around the wiring, heat is applied to radially shrink the material to form an outer layer.
Used in various industries since the 1950s, heat shrink tubing is available in single and dual wall options. It is graded by the expansion ratio, which refers to the difference between the expansion and shrinkage recovery rates.

General Installation Instructions for Thermafix® Heat Shrink Products
Specific steps are followed to ensure Thermafix® heat shrink products produce a tight seal. Select the largest diameter of tubing that will fit snuggly after heat is applied, according to the specific shrink ratio. Since the tubing shrinks radially (in diameter) and not lengthwise, it should be cut precisely to the length needed.
Using a low-intensity flame heat source, such as an infrared or hot air gun, heat is applied along the tubing until it’s snug around the wires. If using the adhesive lined tubing, extra time may be needed to heat.
